2020
A mother’s story began in February of 2020, when our daughter was chosen to pledge an African American Sorority. At that time, we thought she’d received the consecration that she’d hoped for, not knowing it would be the catalyst for a series of life-changing experiences. You see, she had been a class of 2020 high school graduate. A heartbreaking time when in-person activities suddenly ceased. A time when she was to experience some of the best memories of her life, her senior year was taken. It was this moment that encouraged us to feel that life had shifted in her favor. Yet it would only challenge her more than she’d ever know.
I will spare you every detail, but no one along the way aided her or our family. In fact, they caused more unexpected harm. First were her line sisters and the sorority adviser who turned their backs on her and chose damage control over sisterhood, from the Illinois college, whose police department left her in crisis, to the school's Title IV department, which refused to investigate. The attorneys who initially insisted they could help but ultimately abandoned us after inspiring us, and numerous psychiatrists whom is diagnosed her and who under- and over-medicated her. Despite it all, she persevered with the unyielding love of her family and friends. With no prior history of mental illness, for a mentally and physically healthy young woman, life changed in an instant. If she were to persevere, then I would have to fight. I had to fight battles that I can only attest to a mother’s superpower. I relied on prayer, instincts, my research skills, and my support group to get me through. I was given a task in life that is undeniable.
Then, BALANCE - (1) the state of being stabilized or harmonious, (2) giving equal treatment or consideration, and (3) keeping parts of life in healthy proportion. Biblically, Proverbs 11:1 A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is His delight. Spiritually, balance often means wisdom and harmony. As a Mom, my life shifted, but through love and ultimately finding balance, I was empowered. Most of us experience unbearable obstacles, but some find ways to love despite it all.
